2018 to be a bumper year for Audi

Audi has announced plans to launch five new models in 2018, which will include its first fully electric car, the e-Tron electric SUV. The news comes as the brand officially launches the A8, which will be its most high-tech car ever.

Focus on autonomy and electric
The Audi A8 includes innovative autonomous driving systems, which will then be filtered through the rest of the brand’s models. In total this car will have 41 driver assistant functions, including Traffic Jam Pilot, which can take control of the driving when traffic is slow moving.

This is the first autonomous system fitted into a production car that uses a laser scanner, along with the radar, cameras and ultrasonic sensors. It has the capacity to handle the starting, steering, accelerating and braking mechanisms.

The A8 will go on sale in the UK this October, with prices expected to start from just under £70,000. Heading into next year the brand has big ambitions and, along with its first electric vehicle, there will be a new A1, A6, A7 and Q3 launched.

There are also plans to have an L e-Tron version of the A8, which will feature a 3.0 litre V6 turbo petrol engine and an electric motor, to produce a range of up to 31 miles running on electric only.

Looking forward
As part of its plans for the future, Audi has unveiled a three pronged approach to the ‘future of mobility’.

This consists of MyAudi, which is concerned with how drivers interact with a vehicle and connectivity issues, which will be handled through an infotainment system.

It will also involve Audi AI (artificial intelligence), which will concern the use of piloted driving. The third element of the strategy will be Audi e-Tron, which is a sub-brand for its electric models, along with all of the plug-in hybrid vehicles.
